Garage Door Tuneup and Maintenance

Posted on August 10, 2019February 10, 2023 by GEM Garage Door Repair

Most manufacturers recommend a garage door tuneup, inspection, and maintenance on both the door and accessories anywhere from every 3 months to every 6 months. This extends the life of your garage door and the associated mechanisms involved. It’s also important to do this for safety reasons as well. If you’re not sure what to do for a tune up, we can help. We have affordable rates and can get things running great again. We also regularly post tips in our blog on our main page. If you’re a DIY type of person, check out some of our articles and if you have any questions, give us a call and we’d be happy to help.

New heavy duty garage door hinges
We used heavy duty parts when fixing garage doors to make sure the fix isn’t just a band aid.

Who can hear your garage door and from how far when you open it?

We also offer a squeaky deal where we can quiet down your loud garage door and rollers and improve the reliability and quietness of your garage. We use high duty cycle, long life rollers and hinges in our maintenance. Our rollers have 13 sealed ball bearings in them to make sure your door works properly and reliably for a very long time. They also are wrapped in nylon so that they are quiet. If you have steel rollers, this will make a huge difference.

When you click the garage door opener remote and your neighbors a block away know you’re home, you probably are going to need your Garage Door Tuned up. The squeals and squeaks may be annoying, but do it for the longevity of your door. The working parts will last longer and the door will be safer.

Can I do the garage door tuneup myself?

At the minimum, you should inspect your garage door for damage. This includes hinges, rollers, the track, the door, and the garage door opener. You can use a white lithium grease on the hinges. Do not spray a lubricant onto the nylon or rubber part of the rollers, this can degrade them. Inspect your torsion spring for damage and carefully lubricate it in the middle section of the spring with a heavy weight motor oil for protection against the elements. Disengage your garage door opener and run the door by hand and make sure that it opens and closes smoothly. These are some of the basics you can try if you’re a DIY type of person. Remember, safety first.
